Employment and Auto Sales

I’m still baffled by those who dig seven layers deep into macro analysis (is that micro macroeconomics?) If you only ever follow temp employment, housing starts and auto sales data you’ll have everything you need. All three break negative before we enter recession. Every “double dip” prediction we had since 2009 (all 97 times we were entering a double dip) was easily discounted by these metrics. Following the weekly jobs numbers is folly as the revisions are so material they render the initial number essentially worthless as to its specificity. Their only quality is to the general trend in employment.

“Davidson” submits:

Light Weight Vehicle Sales continue to perk along just under historical highs of 2007 at the April 2013 est pace of 14.9 SAAR(Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate). This continues to reflect enough future demand that Ford has issued several announcements that they are hiring additional employees-see both Auto Light Truck Sales chart below and recent headlines on Ford’s hiring plans. The Household Survey data will be updated tomorrow with the new figures.

There should be no confusion about the recent economic headlines. Consumption is rising which means that more employees are required which means that the newly hired will likely become future vehicle and home buyers themselves.

Our economy is expanding, employment is expanding, corporate revenue and earnings are expanding and this has always resulted in higher equity prices. All continues to look optimistic for equity prices and not very optimistic for bond prices except in special circumstances in my opinion.*
